Samay theory (time theory) is the traditional system in Hindustani music that assigns specific prahar (time periods) of the day or night to different raags. The theory holds that each raag has an optimal time when its emotional and aesthetic impact is greatest. While the system is based on traditional observation rather than rigid scientific law, it remains a deeply respected organizing principle that shapes concert programming and pedagogical practice.
