How to hear it

A 10-matra taal used in dhrupad contexts, structured in five equal divisions with a strong, martial rhythmic personality.

Start by clapping along: clap on the sam (first beat) and on each tali marker. Wave your hand on the khali. As you practice, you will begin to feel the cycle even without counting.

Learner notes

Less commonly encountered than Chautaal but important in the dhrupad taal repertoire. Its five-part symmetry gives it a distinct driving quality.
