How to hear it

A 12-matra taal with six equal vibhags, widely used in dhrupad performance and considered one of the older taal structures.

Start by clapping along: clap on the sam (first beat) and on each tali marker. Wave your hand on the khali. As you practice, you will begin to feel the cycle even without counting.

Learner notes

Its six balanced divisions and strong syllabic theka make it central to dhrupad repertoire. Learners of pakhawaj and dhrupad encounter it early.
