Pandit Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande was the most important musicologist in the history of Hindustani music, providing the systematic framework through which the tradition is taught today. A trained lawyer from Bombay who devoted his life to music scholarship, he traveled across India documenting thousands of bandish compositions and raag treatments. His greatest contribution was the thaat system—classifying Hindustani raags into ten parent scales—which brought organizational clarity to a vast melodic tradition. He authored 'Hindustani Sangeet Paddhati' and 'Kramik Pustak Malika,' foundational texts in music education. He established music schools in Lucknow and Nagpur that became models for institutional music education across India.
