Pandit Vishnu Digambar Paluskar was one of the most transformative figures in Hindustani music history, a visionary educator and accomplished Gwalior gharana vocalist who democratized access to classical music. He founded the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya in Lahore in 1901, creating the first modern institutional framework for teaching Hindustani music. His approach broke the monopoly of the hereditary guru-shishya system. His devotional singing in raags like Yaman, Bhairav, Durga, Bhoopali, and Kedar carried a spiritual fervor that inspired the nationalist movement. His bhajan 'Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram' became associated with Mahatma Gandhi's prayer meetings. His son D.V. Paluskar became one of the greatest vocalists of the next generation.
