Biography
Ustad Vilayat Khan is celebrated as one of the most innovative and expressive sitarists in history, the creator of the gayaki ang (vocal style) on sitar that fundamentally transformed the instrument's melodic capabilities. Heir to the Etawah (Imdadkhani) gharana founded by his grandfather Ustad Imdad Khan, he developed techniques of sustained meend, delicate kan swaras, and voice-like phrasing that made the sitar sing with unprecedented emotional depth. His technique prioritized singing qualities and emotional nuance over speed and ornamentation, and he famously removed the jawari buzz from his sitar to achieve a cleaner, more vocal tone.
