Biography

Pandit Ram Narayan was the musician most responsible for establishing the sarangi as a respected solo concert instrument, a mission he pursued over seven decades. Born in Udaipur, he began as an accompanist but believed the sarangi's vocal quality made it ideal for solo performance. His warm, singing tone and mastery of meend and gamak made his performances of Yaman, Marwa, Bageshree, Bhimpalasi, and Darbari Kanada deeply moving experiences. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan and performed at major festivals worldwide. His career, extending to his death at age 97 in 2024, represents one of the longest artistic missions in Indian music history.
