Biography
Pandit Pannalal Ghosh was the true pioneer of the classical bansuri, the first musician to demonstrate that the bamboo flute could be a vehicle for serious Hindustani classical performance. Born in Barisal (now Bangladesh), he designed longer, larger-bore bamboo flutes producing lower octave notes essential for meditative alap. His association with the Maihar school through Baba Allauddin Khan deepened his raag knowledge. His recordings of Yaman, Marwa, Darbari Kanada, Kedar, and Patdeep revealed the bansuri's full potential. His untimely death in 1960 came before his revolution was complete, but Hariprasad Chaurasia and others built on his foundational work. He is regarded as the father of the classical bansuri tradition.
