Biography
Pandit Nikhil Banerjee was one of the most profound sitarists in the Hindustani tradition, a musician's musician revered by peers and connoisseurs for the extraordinary depth and purity of his playing. Born in Calcutta, he was a child prodigy who came under the tutelage of Baba Allauddin Khan at Maihar, absorbing the comprehensive raga knowledge and rigorous discipline of the Maihar gharana. He developed a style distinguished by extraordinary melodic depth, meditative patience, and an almost vocal quality of expression that drew on the best of both the Maihar school's structural rigor and a deeply personal emotional sensibility. His performances of Bageshree, Malkauns, Hemant, Puriya Dhanashree, and Marwa are treasured recordings that reveal new dimensions with each listening. His untimely death at 55 in 1986 cut short a career that was still reaching new heights, and his concert recordings from the 1970s and 1980s remain some of the most sought-after in sitar literature.
