Biography
Hirabai Barodekar was one of the most distinguished vocalists of the Kirana gharana and a pioneering figure for women in Hindustani classical music. Born in Baroda as Champakali, she trained under Ustad Abdul Karim Khan himself, absorbing the gharana's emphasis on swara shuddhi and meditative alap. Her luminous voice made her one of the first women to achieve regular prominence on the Hindustani concert stage. Her recordings of Bhairav, Todi, Yaman, Puriya Dhanashree, and Bageshree are treasured examples of early Kirana style. She was awarded the Padma Bhushan and Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. Her legacy extended through the example she set for women like Kishori Amonkar and Gangubai Hangal.
