Biography
Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia is widely credited with bringing the bansuri to the highest levels of Hindustani concert performance, building on the foundational work of Pt. Pannalal Ghosh. Born in Allahabad, he initially trained in vocal music before studying flute under Annapurna Devi, daughter of Baba Allauddin Khan, whose guidance shaped his deeply melodic approach to the instrument. His warm, meditative tone, seamless meend technique, and fluid alap movements have made his recordings of Yaman, Bageshree, Desh, and Lalit among the most beloved in the flute repertoire. Alongside Shivkumar Sharma, he formed the legendary Shiv-Hari duo that composed iconic Bollywood scores including Silsila, Chandni, and Darr. He was honored with the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan, and founded the Vrindaban Gurukul near Mumbai to train the next generation of flautists. His late-night recordings of Lalit and Chandrakauns are considered among the finest atmospheric performances in modern Indian classical music.
