Biography
Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan was one of the most revered sarod players of the twentieth century, embodying the deepest classical values of the Bangash sarod tradition. Born into a distinguished family tracing six generations of sarod players, he developed a majestic, dhrupad-influenced style characterized by weighty alap, powerful jod-jhala, and tonal gravity. His command of Darbari Kanada, Yaman, Todi, Shree, and Marwa was legendary. He served as court musician to the Maharaja of Gwalior. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award. His greatest legacy was training his son Amjad Ali Khan, who carried the Bangash tradition to global audiences.
