Biography
Pandit Bhimsen Joshi was a towering figure in Hindustani vocal music and a recipient of India's highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna (2009). Trained in the Kirana gharana lineage of Sawai Gandharva, he was celebrated for his intense, devotional renditions marked by a uniquely powerful voice and extraordinary breath control. His performances of raags like Todi, Multani, Puriya Dhanashree, Bhairav, and Darbari Kanada remain definitive listening experiences that set benchmarks for generations of vocalists.
