Biography
Ustad Amjad Ali Khan carries forward a six-generation sarod tradition rooted in the Bangash lineage of Gwalior, son of the legendary Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan. He began performing publicly as a child and quickly developed a distinctive style characterized by clarity, warmth, and a singing quality that makes the sarod's deep tonal palette uniquely accessible and expressive. His innovative stroke technique and emphasis on melody over percussive attack distinguish his approach from other sarod schools. His command of raags like Darbari Kanada, Yaman, Desh, Bhimpalasi, and Marwa has made him one of the most recorded and honored instrumentalists in Indian classical music, earning him the Padma Vibhushan and numerous international recognitions. He has also composed for orchestras and collaborated with international musicians, bringing the sarod to global concert stages. His sons Amaan Ali Bangash and Ayaan Ali Bangash continue the family's musical dynasty, representing the seventh generation of this illustrious lineage.
