Biography
Ustad Alladiya Khan was the founding genius of the Jaipur-Atrauli gharana, one of the most intellectually rigorous vocal traditions in Hindustani music. Born in Atrauli near Aligarh, he developed a distinctive style characterized by complex melodic structures, rare raag choices, unusual taan patterns, and sophisticated rhythmic interplay. His approach favored architectural complexity over easy emotional appeal. His recordings reveal commanding authority and extraordinary musical sophistication. He trained brilliant disciples including Mogubai Kurdikar, Kesarbai Kerkar, and Manji Khan, through whom the tradition flourished and eventually produced Kishori Amonkar. He lived to 91, performing almost until the end.
