Biography
Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty is one of the most versatile and technically accomplished Hindustani vocalists of his generation, a Patiala gharana master whose four-octave range and devastating taan technique have earned him recognition as one of the most complete musicians in the tradition. He trained under Jnan Prakash Ghosh, Munawar Ali Khan, and others, absorbing the Patiala emphasis on powerful taans and wide-ranging leaps. His command of khayal is matched by proficiency in thumri, tappa, and tarana. His performances of Yaman, Darbari Kanada, Puriya Dhanashree, Kamod, and Bhairavi combine brilliance and depth. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan, and his teaching produced outstanding vocalists including his daughter Kaushiki Chakrabarty.
