Biography
Ustad Abdul Karim Khan was the founding genius of the Kirana gharana vocal style, establishing an aesthetic that shaped generations of singers including Sawai Gandharva, Bhimsen Joshi, Gangubai Hangal, and Hirabai Barodekar. Born in Kairana into a family of musicians, he developed a revolutionary approach to khayal that emphasized swara shuddhi, slow meditative alap, and emotive yet restrained melodic elaboration. His voice possessed a haunting, ethereal quality, and his 78-rpm recordings reveal extraordinary subtlety and depth. His command of raags like Todi, Bhairav, Bageshree, Lalit, and Darbari Kanada set the template for the entire Kirana lineage. He was also an accomplished sarangi player.
